In Service to Others

Living in a world that often elevates the needs and desires of the individual, we humans can lose sight of the important role that social connection plays in our psychology, physiology, and overall sense of well-being. To be clear, when I say ‘social connection’, I am not speaking of the kind of connection that we get through our ever-present technology, but rather the bonds that we make when we choose to connect deeply with our community - when we intentionally carve out time in our busy schedules to give of ourselves - without an expectation of receiving anything in return.

Today I have the honour of awarding the Brentwood Service Pin to students in our midst who have dedicated a significant amount of their time, and energy, in service to others - either in their home communities, abroad, in our local Mill Bay/Duncan community or within the gates here at Brentwood. Without the efforts of these individuals, the events and initiatives organized by SAC, BEAT, OMNI, Grad Council and B-Well (as well as other special events) and the work of the SEC would simply not have been possible this year.

Service pins are awarded to students who have logged the following levels for volunteer hours.

Bronze - over 100 hours: Avik B, Nina Barry, Grace Davis, Samantha D, Lucinda Gullison, Chloe H, Hazel L, Lisa Marykuca, Sarah O, Sky S & Hannah Waring.

Silver - over 200 hours: Philip Akindipe, Ella Barnsley, Julian Bell, Amy Pavlis, Emily Pavlis, Tait Stevens & Calvin Watts.

Gold - over 300 hours: Kameel A, Nicole Chan, Anna Draper, Evan M, Zander L, Emily Nimmo & Julian Wan.

I would like to offer my congratulations and gratitude to all of the recipients for so generously volunteering their time in service of others.
