How to Construct a Sustainable Building

2 July 2009

Since April 2008, Knappett Projects Inc. have been constructing our new dining hall and student services centre next to the T. Gil Bunch Theatre. This building was designed by architectural firm Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden based in Vancouver under the supervision of Norm Hotson.
Based on its design and the construction practices, this new sustainable building is intended to have minimal environmental impact and, in doing so, achieve LEED Gold status. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) points are assigned based on the number of green features in a particular building. More information about LEED ratings can be found here.
Knappett Projects Inc. has been responsible for a number of LEED buildings, including the new Nanaimo ferry terminal. Led by Steve Heyer, thirty to thirty-five people are typically working on the Brentwood site every day, with an estimated total of seventy-five required to complete the building. In order to meet LEED requirements, Knappett employs a certified LEED Accredited Professional who manages the process in conjunction with Recollective Consulting, a Vancouver firm hired by HBBH to provide assistance. During construction, on-site LEED practices are supervised by Mr. Heyer who ensures, for example, that proper recycling and disposal techniques are used.
The intended completion date for the building is 25th December 2009. For more information about sustainability at Brentwood, please see our new sustainability page
