On Wednesday January 25, 44 of Brentwood’s Ice Hockey players ferried over to Vancouver to play in a tournament hosted by St George’s. Along with the senior and junior team, we also sent half a team which combined with St George’s to form a hybrid. Players arrived at the Holiday Inn Bridgeport Wednesday night set for the day ahead with two hours of prep while the junior team arrived later that night. The juniors had been playing a game in Lake Cowichan.  The next morning, the players made their way towards UBC where they would spend the day. The senior team would start the day with a 2-1 win over Kitsilano  while the Brentwood Junior team would lose to our hybrid 4-2. The seniors went on to lose their next game against St George’s 3-2. They would finish the day 2-1. The juniors would lose their second game against the St. George’s U14 team and would then beat Britannia 4-3. The Brentwood mixed team went on and beat the St. George’s Junior Varsity team 4-1. This left the mixed team 2-0 and the underdogs of the tournament. After a wild game for the Junior team, the bus picked us up and off we went to White Spot for a team dinner. Soon after it was another night of prep and even some tests. Everyone was getting ready for an important day two of the tournament.  On the final morning of the tournament, members of the mixed team woke up extra early to go and play their first game at 8:00 against Britannia. They would end up losing 4-3 and then played again right after against the powerful St George’s Under 14 team. After a hard-fought game, they would go on and lose a heartbreaker causing them to be eliminated from the finals. The Juniors would only play 1 game and that was against the St George’s Junior Varsity team. In a hard battle, they would lose.  However, there was hope. The Seniors would win their game which put them into the semifinal against St George’s: a rematch of Showcase with large cheers from Felix W, Privett ‘20 and other players. With Brentwood up 2-0 halfway through the second, it was going to be a close game. With amazing saves by Reid G, Privett ‘17 and great performance by the seniors eventually the game was tied late in the 3rd. This meant that they would go into a shootout. The first two shooters from both teams missed the net and then our third shooter missed as well. It was up to Reid to keep it going, but after an amazing attempt, the shot barely entered the net: St George’s won 3-2. The trip home was fine. Nobody was angry about the loss. Most of these teams are coming back to play at this year’s Ross Cup, hosted by Brentwood. Players in the entire program are focused and it will be a stellar tournament with Brentwood trying to repeat as champions.  The St. George’s tournament might have had some tough games but many good things came out of it. Players from our teams went out and played their first tournaments and had some great results. First goals were scored by Lukas S, Ellis ‘19 (mixed team) and Matthew MD, Rogers ‘19 (Junior Team). Our results were fine with the Seniors placing 4th. The Juniors team placed 5th and the Mixed team placed 3rd.  This was a successful tournament and it couldn’t have happened without Coach Mike Flynn and his coaching staff of Mr Shadlock, Mr McPherson, Robb and Jackson Webb and Mr Kleinschmidt. Thanks also to Mrs Martin who came chaperone and was our cowbell ringer. Also, thanks to Bus Driver Bruce who drove the team back and forth from Mill Bay to UBC. The Ross Cup is just under three weeks away. There will be plenty of action before the term ends.  Thomas B, Ellis ‘18
