The Senior Boys’ basketball team, ranked 10th going into the provincial AA championships tournament this past week, won three of their four games and waltzed away with the school’s first ever provincial medal.
A first round win over #6 Southridge, however, saw Jason M lead the team with 24 points. Ben H had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Jordan Charles 16 points off the bench.
In the second round against hometown favourite and #1 ranked Sa’ Hali of Kamloops, Ben H had another double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds while David L had 18 points, and Jordan C 14.
The third round saw the boys encounter their only loss to Mission, 55-52. After a solid first half effort, Mission pressed Brentwood and our 9 point lead evaporated. A tight and tense 4th quarter saw Mission earn a hard fought win. Initial dejection after the defeat quickly turned into a seniors’ led determination to complete the season on a high note.
The boys’ final game for 3rd/4th place was, on paper, a difficult one for Brentwood, who had to face St. Thomas More. STM had defeated Lambrick Park earlier in the tournament, and Lambrick had beaten Brentwood on three different occasions earlier in the season.
The team, however, were in determined mood and came out playing aggressively on both ends of the floor. Led by the senior contingent of Jason M, Ben H and Raffy G and heavily supported by Victor A, the team started effectively.  David L logged valuable minutes in the opening quarter and Grade 10 players Shalev S and Jordan C sparked the team coming off the bench - both had learned some valuable lessons from the Mission game the day before and played a key role in this match.
As well as earning the bronze medal in this 16 team tournament, Brentwood was selected Most Sportmanlike team, Ben H was named a First team All-star, and Jordan C was named a Second Team All-star.
In a nutshell, the team played their best basketball of the year during this tournament. The squad loses Ben, Raffy, Jason and Victor from the starting lineup, but the remainder of the team returns. Bring on 2011-2012; we love Kamloops in the springtime!
