High Scores on The Small Rock
Heroes come in many different shapes and sizes - big and small, strong and weak, young and old. However, the hero of the Senior Girls Basketball team wore no cape, had no luscious locks and baby blue eyes, nor was gifted with the strapping body of Poseidon, as we crossed wild waters on our way to Salt Spring Island.
No, our hero was garbed in black, and adorned with a Brentwood cap. But we will get back to that later.
After a last-minute cancellation of what was supposed to be our opening game of the season - due to illness at our neighbor, Shawnigan Lake School - the Senior Girls, stacked together like canned sardines, made our way across the treacherous waters of the Sansum Narrows en route to Gulf Islands Secondary School.
A 1:45 departure from Crooks Hall had the team in good form to catch the 3:30 ferry from Crofton to Vesuvius, Saltspring Island. Time was running short which called for a quick change on the bus before arriving at Gulf Islands Secondary. The team burst into the gym excited to tip off - and rushing to ensure we would catch the 6:45 ferry home - and not spend the night stranded on Salt Spring.
A successful trip to the Little Rock it was, as the team came home triumphant following an impressive win. Points from all 10 players were too much for the Gulf Islands Scorpions to handle. Top scorer Miranda NP, Alex ‘23 struggled to finish through physicality (otherwise known as uncalled fouls) in the first half, but came alive in the second to finish the game with 19 points. A phenomenal 100% field goal percentage helped Beluchi O, Mack ‘23 secure her career-high 14 points on the night. Big buckets and lots of energy from Sophie H, Mack ‘23 and Ruby M, Allard ‘25 were the icing on the cake to lead us to our 69-point victory.
Unfortunately, an injury to a Gulf Island player that put a pause on the game had us leaving the gym behind schedule. And that was where our hero stepped in. “It’s go time, Richie”, suggested Ms Napier. So, boarding the bus with 15 minutes to make it to the ferry, our bus driver, Richie, who channeled his inner Lewis Hamilton, began the “Nearly impossible drive” (Beluchi O, Mack ‘23) through the thin and windy Salt Spring roads, arriving at the ferry with just minutes to spare.
And so the Senior Girls Basketball team launched its 22-23 season. With a pair of dedicated coaches, a dozen diverse, hard-working and fun-loving athletes, and winter weather that can pivot in an instant, there will be many tales to tell.
