Here Comes the Sun! 1

7 May 2019
Mr Blake Gage - Athletic Director
Spring has sprung and the Brentwood fields, courts, and waterfront have been flooded with sunshine and a full array of sports action.   On the fields, our boys and girls rugby teams are rounding into form and getting ready to gear up for the provincial championships later this month.  The Senior Boys have shown steady progress all season and are coming off a fantastic weekend where our 7s team came third at the BC Provincials. Meanwhile, our Junior Boys have also asserted themselves as a force on the Island having shown well in both sevens and fifteen aside competition including an inspiring 1pt win this last weekend over perennial powerhouse St. George’s School. Our girls team has also shown a great deal of promise and has had some impressive league results. They are rounding nicely into form and should be a contender at the AA championships later this month.  We will keep you posted with their playoff runs. In soccer action, our Junior and Senior girls teams have been battling hard in league play. The Junior Girls have managed to qualify for Islands which we will be hosting on May 9-10. The Senior Girls team has also been busy as they competed at the ISA championship before knocking off Kwalikum this week to earn a berth to the North Island Championship where a top five finish will allow them to qualify for Islands. On the courts, our tennis teams are also gearing up for Provincials. This past week all 4 tennis teams travelled to Vancouver to participate in the ISA tournament. All the teams played extremely well and produced some great results. The Senior Girls placed 5th with the Senior Boys 4th. The Juniors were in the medals with the Junior Boys placing 3rd and receiving a Bronze medal. The top result of the tournament went to the Junior Girls who won the Gold medal and brought home the trophy.  On the water, our rowers represented Brentwood in fine form at last week’s 49th Annual Brentwood International Regatta. 70 Brentwood rowers competed in 44 of the 54 events. The wild weather and winds challenged everyone over the three days but the team performed well and finished in a number of finals winning four silver and three bronze medals. As a club we finished fourth overall and were the top Canadian school. We would like to extend a huge thank you our Head of Rowing, Laryssa Biesenthal and our Regatta Coordinator, Mrs Debbie Sage, for all their hard work organizing and managing the event. Our golf team is also off to a busy start and this week they were competing at both the ISA and the Vic City Police Tournament. While the team did not play its best golf at ISAs, they rounded nicely into form for the Police Tournament where they finished second overall in a field with over 20 teams participating! While our competitive teams are fun to watch, our other programs are equally vibrant and engaging. Outdoor Pursuits has provided our students with amazing opportunities as they have immersed themselves in rock climbing and white water kayaking. Other students have been enjoying an eclectic mix of cross-country running, cross-training, yoga, squash and weight lifting. The third term is, without question, our busiest athletic time of the year. Any visitor to our school on a sports day is sure to be delighted by the activity and enthusiasm that pervades our campus – please consider yourself warmly invited – just try and bring some sun with you!
