Coming back from an amazing trip to the 55th Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Brentwood’s 10 most avid rowers have formed a new sense of community and respect for one another. It was a fantastic bonding experience for everyone and there are many shared memories between all of us! Both of our crews did extremely well, with the girl’s crew coming just 20 seconds short of the qualifying time for next year and with the boy’s crew coming sixth in their race! Just going and attending this prestigious regatta is something to be proud of, but the results are nothing short of amazing.

The atmosphere of the event was like no other, with tens of thousands of people watching, racing and roaming around the busy trailer area. This has been, by far, one of my very favorite regattas and I am so thankful I was able to experience it!

Other than the most exhilarating part of the trip - the racing - we had the opportunity to visit Harvard with a tour from Brentwood alumna Kate Wallace who also rowed for Harvard. Another Brentwood alum who attended Harvard was Malcolm Howard. While touring the Harvard men’s boathouse, we saw photographs of him and had the chance to meet his former crew members. Thanks to all of this, we are definitely more excited than ever to explore our many post-secondary options, especially the ones that may involve varsity rowing!

Our beloved coach, Mrs. Biesenthal, had this to say about the trip: “My goal as Head of Rowing at Brentwood is to provide as many of the amazing rowing experiences that I was so fortunate to have had during my career as a high-performance athlete. Head of the Charles in Boston is one of my fondest memories of the autumn season - we would come back from the Olympic Games, or World Championships, and this would be one of our first ‘training sessions’ to kick off the new season. Thus, my goal was to expose Brentwood rowers to the opportunity to compete at the world’s largest two-day rowing event, giving them the experience to race on the same course as Olympic and World Championship medalists, top US and Canadian universities, plus the many alumni crews that continue to enjoy rowing as part of their daily lives.”

The training goal was to put it out as an incentive for BCS rowers to continue to train throughout the summer months. Selection happens as soon as we are back at school in September and training continues until we depart for Boston in mid-October. Our rowers need to be fit and ready to train hard, right when school begins in September.

I try to tie in visits to Boston-based university rowing clubs and universities to demonstrate to our BCS athletes the opportunities that sport can open up to them.”

On behalf of everyone who had the chance to experience this incredible event, I want to say a huge thank you to Ms B who has pushed and will continue to push us in order to make us the best we can possibly be. Without her, none of this would have been possible and I think it is safe to say that none of us would be the rowers we are today without her incredibly positive influence.
