Hawaiian Day Adds Spirit

30 January 2019

Hula skirts, flip flops, Hawaiian shirts, and leis are the essential accoutrements for a winter day in Mill Bay. Of course that is only if you, like the Brentwood student body, are trying to shield yourself from the cloudy reality that is mid-January.  This past Friday was Hawaiian Day, and even if the concept didn’t brighten up Mill Bay skies, the colours on all of the Hawaiian shirts certainly did.  As part of Spirit Week, almost all days this week are themed with a certain dress-up extravaganza, and this is certainly my favourite. There is a comedic factor to watching students attempt to appear nonchalant in shorts, a button up short sleeve, and flip-flops in 4 degree weather. Picture shivers being played off a hula-esque swaying. This, coupled with the disapproving glances of those who had enough foresight to wear hoodies under their shirts, made for the perfect environment of a high school theme day gone both horribly right and brilliantly wrong.  In the evening, we feasted on a Hawaiian luau. From Maui ribs to macadamia nut cookies, we were truly spoiled. To showcase the carefree Hawaiian disposition we had adopted, some of us participated in the hula and limbo competitions. “This makes me want to play the Ukulele,”, said Chloe O, who then proceeded to come to my room and serenade me with her inspiration.  All in all, Hawaiian Day was a fantastic kick off to Spirit Week. Thanks to all who made this day possible.  Amelia H, Allard ‘20
