Happy Puppies

27 January 2017

The third Monday in January, this year January 16th has been labeled ‘Blue Monday’, the saddest day of the year. Lacking in Vitamin D as a result of not seeing much sun since October, we get bogged down by homework and university applications, live for Sunday Brunch (cue the angel choir) and drag ourselves out of bed in the dark.  With its roots in a travel company’s press release, scientific evidence does not support the notion that Blue Monday is, in actuality, the saddest day of the year.  Even so, the SPARC team prepared a special surprise: last Monday, the old cafe/exam hall was turned into a Puppy Room, which housed a few staff dogs as well as one from the Pacific Animal Therapy Society to help chase away the winter blues.  The lovable dogs were available during lunchtime for pats, snuggles, and cuddles. The purpose of the Puppy Room was to alleviate stress and it certainly succeeded in raising spirits. Bridget M, Mackenzie ’20 observed: “When the big puppies played I found watching them made it feel like stress and energy were escaping into the surroundings.” Ms. Cheung and Mr. Robinson’s gangly puppy and Ms. Hall’s adorable pooch wagged their way into the hearts of those with a soft spot for big boisterous pups, while those students who are not so fond of large dogs could visit with Ms. Murtland’s timid friend and the small guest from the Therapy Society.  Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Helper Fah B, Alex ’19 reflected: “The experience was great. Meeting with all the puppies and the joyful community has made me very happy and I’m glad I volunteered.” Thank you SPARC and Nurse Jasmin for organizing the Blue Monday Puppy Room!
