From December 17th until January 10th, the lively and chaotic schedule of Brentwood College is put on hold. These three weeks of holiday look very different for each and every member of our school, but the common factors are some well needed rest, and time spent with family.

Ned B, Privett ‘23 talks about his experiences with being away from home for so long. “The busyness of the school year can be really tough - not to mention being away from family. Brentwood does feel like home away from home, but I still feel like I need a break after this long.” As one of Brentwood’s many Albertan students, Ned will be welcomed back home by a cold, crisp and Christmas.

For local day students, it might not seem like as big of a deal to be heading home for three weeks. However, as Caiden T, Whittall ‘22 put it, “The break is like a long Sunday”. With regular Saturday classes, even day students find they don’t have a ton of leisure time at home.

With so many international students, the Brentwood community really spreads out over the globe during winter break. Finn S, Whittall ‘23 is flying back to Germany, and can’t wait any longer: “As a first year boarding student, I’ve never been away from home this long and I am really looking forward to seeing my family again. We have our own traditions at home for Christmas, and I’m glad I get to be home for all of it.”

Dylan G, Whittall ‘23 is one of the students who lives here on campus, and when asked about his thoughts on the break, he answered: “I personally like having the students around because it means that my friends are all here, and it’s definitely not the same without them. However, I know my family definitely likes the peace and quiet on campus.”

Many of the teachers feel similarly about the big winter break. Mr Collis elaborated on his plans for the holiday. “I’m looking forward to spending some time with my family and getting out to play some disc golf. Not to mention getting away from students like Sam B.” Boarding Faculty Assistant, Ms West, says, “Although I love all the boys in the house very much, I will be happy not to be on early morning wake ups for a couple weeks”.

Before long, the holidays will be over and the school year will once again be in full swing as we hurtle towards the final term. I think it is safe to say that everyone is happy for the break from their busy schedules, and will be ready to take on the New Year.
