Happiness is Second Term Soccer Skills

Second term is a strenuous time for everyone. Academics are challenging as we turn to the winter season and cold temperatures burrow into our bones as rain descends. However, a shining silver lining behind all those clouds is … sports afternoons.

As the clouds roll through our sky, the sun is always sure to come out during soccer skills. This co-ed program is only offered for one term a year. Luckily it falls on second term, serving as a bright star in a sea of grey weather. Many students rejoice when second term rolls around and soccer skills becomes fully available to everyone.

“There are so many incredible things about soccer skills. I love the coaches especially - Mr Barrett and Mr Paul Collis. They’re the best duo I could ask for. The fact that soccer skills is a multi-grade program and open to everyone is such a great way of creating a positive and inviting environment. I always feel my best on the turf” commented Sarah O, Hope ‘23.

The coaches are certainly a bonus to the program, with Mr Barrett’s expertise - he led the senior boys' team to provincial gold this fall - and Mr Collis’ witty humour and amicability, they are a duo to remember forever.

The only challenge presented by soccer skills is the numbing cold the players sometimes endure. “Sometimes it gets really cold and you don’t feel like playing. But when you get moving around and sweating, it basically becomes summer. The cold never bothers anyone” perks Brooke R, Mack ‘24.

Most afternoons at soccer skills are passed with games and scrimmages. Players leave all they have on the field and come out with big smiles. These beautiful games pass the chilly afternoon quickly, and the skill demonstrated on the field is awe-inspiring. Players consistently run and sprint and never seem to tire. The effort presented at soccer skills is like no other sport.

Soccer skills is also inclusive to drop-in players also, so if you are ever in need of a great way to pass a second term afternoon, the happy soccer community on the turf will take you in.
