This past weekend, the Brentwood rowing shed invited the Green Lake crew from Seattle for our annual rowing camp. Every year, for the past 19, Green Lake visits our campus with two enthusiastic and cheerful eights. There is a girls’ eight and a boys’ eight that train side by side as well as race against similarly matched eights from Brentwood. This is a result of the strong relationships between Brentwood and the Green Lake crew since the 1960s.  Mr Brian Carr, one of ou senior rowing coaches, had some cheerful words about the camp: “This is an incredible opportunity for the Brentwood kids to get three days of competitive practices in with our friends from Seattle. For the new rowers in the squad, they get to be involved in a competitive environment without having to go to a regatta somewhere else. In a few weeks we will be travelling down to Seattle to participate in the Green Lake Fall Frostbite Regatta. Our girls crews will be billeted out with GLC families. Next fall will be our 20th year of this dual meet and the eve of our 50th Brentwood International Regatta in the spring.” Not only is this camp an amazing training opportunity, but also an opportunity for the athletes as well as the students to interact with some outside faces on campus. “I have only attended this event once before, that being last year, my first year of rowing. I have looked forward to this event again this year because I love interacting with other rowing teams and this camp allows for that to happen” Ella H. Alex ‘19, said before the camp started. This year, Ella and I have two girls from Green Lake bunking in our dorm for the weekend, Isabella and Maggie! It is a tradition that the athletes stay in the dorms with fellow rowers from Brentwood. Both the boys’ and girls’ eights will be spread amongst 8 boarding houses to stay with a Brentwood rower or two. Whether they are in common rooms on couches or in rooms on bean bags, it gives the athletes a close feel for everything that Brentwood has to offer.  The camp consisted of four sessions. Saturday morning was for side-by-side pieces to brush up on some technique before the races on Sunday! Race day includes two races, a distance piece of 1000 metres and a short, 500 metre piece to finish off the weekend. After the races finished, all the athletes and coaches joined together for a fantastic brunch in Crooks Hall. Despite the chilly, early morning rows, the crews were still eager to get into their seats and row. It was a great weekend for both the Green Lake and Brentwood crews and everyone is looking forward to next fall!  Hannah C, Alex ‘19
