Great Start to the Season in Sports

21 September 2010
Volleyball The Senior A Girls volleyball squad came away with a hard-earned bronze medal at the Dover Bay Tournament. In semi-final action the girls took on last year’s AAAA provincial gold medalist, Handsworth. After losing the first game 20-25, the girls came storming back in the second and earned a hard fought 25-19 win. In the deciding game, Handsworth played flawless volleyball and were victorious with a score of 15-6. In the bronze medal game, Brentwood beat a talented and tall Dover Bay team 25-16 and 25-20. Shelby Michaels played an exceptional level of volleyball all weekend and Emily Hindson was a wall in the front row putting up some solid blocks. Next up for the girls is the prestigious 52 team UBC high school tournament Sept 24/25. Mrs. Foughner The Junior A Girls also competed in the Dover Bay tourney, winning their matches against Francis Kelsey in two sets and Chemainus in three including a nail-biting 16-14 score in the final set. The only junior team in the contest, they finished fifth out of 11 teams on the consolation side of the draw. Mr. Warner   Soccer Senior Boys soccer travelled to SMUS for the ISAs this past weekend. The side included a large number of players as many boys were only able to play on day one before they travelled to Bamfield Saturday morning. The lads came away with three losses and a win, but more important was the opportunity to get in some good competition prior to league play. The squad exhibited determination and spirit but further conditioning is needed, and more playing time together will solidify them as a unit. Mr. Horth

Field Hockey The Senior A Girls field hockey team had a quick start to their season as they hosted and played in the Friendship Cup tournament this weekend. In a strong pool, the girls gained some valuable experience playing some of the top teams on the Island. The girls finished third in their pool with a record of 2-2: their losses came against Oak Bay and Cowichan High and their wins were earned against Vanier and SMUS. In their crossover game they defeated Kelsey 1-0. Congratulations to the entire team for a successful debut.
