Grade Nine Adventure Week

9 October 2020

On October 1st the Grade 9 Adventure Week began. Every year Brentwood sends a group of eager, Grade 9 students up to explore Strathcona Park. This week-long escapade is filled to the brim with creative opportunities, risk-taking and the ability to learn more about yourself throughout your adventures.

Due to COVID-19, this year's trip was local, taking place on campus and around the Cowichan Valley. Luckily for all of us 9s, this did not limit our enjoyment in the slightest. Many Brentwood alumni were kind enough to help make this wild adventure possible by taking the time to run some of our activities. Thanks to the hard work of many people, we would like to say that this year’s Adventure Week was an outstanding success.

The students were encouraged to participate in many new, daring activities. Adventures included, but were not limited to, rock climbing above a rushing river, playing amongst a high ropes course, paddle boarding in Mill Bay, and learning how to build our own survival shelters. A large number of our journeys took place on the stunningly picturesque waters of Mill Bay. The bay was the perfect place to canoe, paddleboard, and kayak with our groups. Each student was given the opportunity to enjoy participating in a new activity with their friends.

We were consistently encouraged to challenge ourselves and make the most out of our time outdoors. There were many struggles that we faced along the way, but, as time passed, we became more comfortable and confident. This led to playful shoves off of paddleboards, splashes of water into canoes, and singing in the trees while at Wild Play. Although there were some difficult times, we managed to overcome our fears as a group, allowing ourselves to laugh, play and bask in each other's company. Not only did we learn about ourselves, but our new classmates as well.

This trip will now serve as a memorable, shared experience for the Grade 9s that we will remember fondly in the years to come. Many of the journeys sparked a new passion for some of these activities, leading us to discover new hobbies and ways to spend our time. This on-campus trip was an incredible one and we owe it to all of the people who dedicated themselves to making this possible. We would love to thank these selfless individuals for allowing us to have such a splendid, creative, and wild time. A special thank you to Mr. Griffiths and Mr. Norman for working tirelessly to bring this exciting week to life. You have played a huge role in bringing all of these adventures into our hearts.
