Grade 9 ISA Sevens Rugby

16 November 2011
Dave. McCarthey
On a perfect fall day in Victoria, the Grade 9 rugby contingent enjoyed a “jamboree” of free flowing rugby at a seven-a-side competition organized by St Michael’s University School. Our squad of 26 players were entered in both A and B categories, playing round robin games against St. Georges, Shawnigan and St Michael’s. Despite their relative lack of experience, both teams stood up well and reached the semi-finals after group play. Seven-a-side rugby will make its debut at the Olympics in 2016 and features a much faster style of play with room for players who are fleet of foot to show off their paces.

The A team was bolstered by some boys fresh from the soccer field who had all of three practices under their belt but who had lots of ball sense and that vital ingredient in sevens, “wheels”. Diego M, Aaron H and Reid V helped the side to score some impressive tries and give the opposition more than a few worried moments. The highlight was definitely the 3-3 tie against Shawnigan, a game that we led for 11 out of the 12 minutes.

Shawnigan eventually lost to SMUS in the final, 4-3, giving an indication of how close the competition was. More importantly, everyone had lots of game time, there were no injuries and a fun day was had by all, particularly the coaches, who enjoyed seeing how much progress this team has made in such a short span of time.
