Last Thursday the Brentwood Cross Country team participated in their first race of the year, a rust buster that took place in Glenora Trailhead Park. This was a small, low-key race that each and every healthy Brentwood XC member had the chance to race in. Beginners were oriented to the trials of trail racing and the seasoned veterans were able to get their racing legs back. The course was littered with gnarled roots, rocks, and one behemoth hill and was a distance of 4 or 6 kilometers depending on the racers’ age category. The team performed well.  Brentwood’s resident speedster Madison H came away with an expected first place in Senior Girls. Somebody bake her a cupcake to celebrate! Clearly running is in the family as her younger brother, Keaton H, was victor in the Junior Boys category by a convincing margin. That boy needs to find himself a cheerleader! Their teammate Ori BC had a good showing as well and won the Senior Boys category. Clearly all of the workouts, cross training, and rest days paid off.  All the other students who participated should also be very proud of their strong performances. Also a pat on the back for Sunil C as he captured the runner up for the Most Improved Runner of the Month Award.     Suffice to say the event was a success on all levels especially for those running their first races. All XC students are keenly awaiting the Vancouver Island Championship race next Wednesday in the hopes of gaining a berth to the BC High School Championships.
