Girls win their first Island AA rugby championship

On Saturday, the girls rugby team won its first Island AA rugby title. In the past four years we have made the final, but come up a little short; this weekend was different. Due to other commitments, the games had to be played on one day with 20 min. halves. In the first game, the girls beat a determined Shawnigan Lake School side with tries from Sarah Barber, Dani Robb, and Nellie Pitoniak. Our aggressive defence smothered the opposition and the forwards controlled much of the set-piece play. In the second game against Ladysmith (a large, physical running team) again solid defence and sterling forward play carried the day. Moving the ball wide stretched the defence and exhausted their forwards freeing Sarah and Nellie to score again. The girls have every reason to be pleased with the open, hard rugby they played to the delight of the parents and friends on the sidelines. The win should place the team well in the BC championships to be played in Williams Lake in two weeks time.
