Girls’ Rugby Opens well at McGeachy

8 March 2012
This past weekend the Girls’ Rugby team opened its playing season placing 3rd at the McGeachy Tournament sponsored by the Cowichan RFC. On Friday they opened against Ladysmith scoring some fine team tries after some rather confused play in the opening 15 minutes. The backs moved the ball wide, handling well, while the back row pressured the opposition into errors. The win, by over 30 points, was a promising start.
Later in the day, the girls faced Vanier SS, a AAA side from Courtenay. From the opening whistle the forwards showed more aggression in their willingness to ruck enabling Lauren A to score a nice try following a superb loose ball pick-up by Emma F. Vanier struck right back and the battle was joined at 7-5. Late in the game, despite some outstanding play from Tyler C and Megan G, we began to make costly errors at the breakdown enabling Vanier to score near the end and snatch victory, 7-12.
Saturday morning, in warm sunshine, the girls beat Alberni SS by 45 points playing some fine open rugby. Many of the newer players, such as Nambi M and Christa B, showed their mettle by running hard with the ball and tackling superbly. Ciel A-B, Megan G, Angie L and Lauren A scored after some attractive passing movements. Late in the game, Shannyn O did a lovely impersonation of Halley’s comet taking a pass from Carolina M at full pace, passing startled defenders on her path to the goal-line.
The tournament was a very positive learning experience in which the newer players followed the lead of the seniors and learned what it was to play fully committed team rugby.
