Earth Week, also known as Earth Awareness Week, is a week-long annual event dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and conservation. The event is held this year from April 17 to 22, culminating in Earth Day on April 22. This year Brentwood is celebrating by holding many events and activities to raise awareness about the importance of environmental conservation and promote sustainable living practices.

Monday kicked off the week with an Earth Tones dress-up day where the entire Brentwood community had the opportunity to wear their favorite earth-toned clothes - and bonus points if people wore thrifted clothing. After dinner, BWell held a bulb-planting activity at Campbell Commons in preparation for spring! “It’s so inspiring to see so much excitement and participation in the Earth Week initiatives going on this week. It has really helped make for a great and successful event that I hope Brentwood will continue to participate in for years to come” Sophie H, BEAT Captain, Mack ‘23 shared.

On Tuesday a nature walk will take place during tutorial and there will be an all-vegetarian lunch served in Crooks Hall to help reduce pollution from livestock production and animal waste. In the OMNI meeting led by OMNI Captain Finley T, students will discuss the environmental impacts LGBTQ2+ face around the world.

Locally sourced meals will be delivered on Thursday which means that no ingredients were sourced more than 100km away in the hopes to reduce carbon emissions in transportation. That evening, BIPOC will hold an open meeting to raise awareness of eco-justice. BIPOC students are planning on giving short presentations about certain topics relating to how people of color are environmentally impacted such as how climate change disproportinately impacts people of colour, the struggle indigenous communities have in protecting their land, the Cancer Alley issue, and so much more.

Friday will be filled with fun Earth Week activities including a nature walk during tutorial. Apples are a really low-carbon fruit so BEAT will host an Applefest where students can make yummy caramel apples during Arts. Lots of students will then volunteer at the Mill Bay Nature School where they are going to help set up, run, and take down to ensure local elementary school children and their families have a good time at their Earth Day Fun Fair.

During senior prep, the grad class is starting a new Brentwood tradition of planting a grad tree in honor of their graduating class - soon an orchard of fruit trees will be present here on campus.

“I was so happy with all of the clubs [BIPOC, SAC, OMNI & BWell] collaborating efforts to have Earth Week filled with fun and impactful activities. I am also really looking forward to the Saturday Earth Day festivities on the beach as Brentwood is such a beautiful environment to celebrate in” enthused Ms Miller, BEAT & Environmental Advocacy Co-Coordinator commented.

Saturday is what the entire week was leading up to … Earth Day! The day will start with early morning yoga led by Ms Miller, and students will go volunteer at the Cowichan Green Community Earth Day Event in Duncan. The event consists of many earth-friendly activities that we get to support such as musical acts, non-profit vendors, a women’s clothing swap, an e-waste recycling booth, and a food trail.

After practice, the sports team will also participate in a waste clean-up session around campus and Mill Bay. The day will end with an open waterfront if the weather permits and a BBQ with low-carbon food!

“I would like to thank Ms Miller, Mr Brennan, Ms Murray, and the Food Services team for their dedicated efforts in organizing and making possible the events that are going to occur throughout this week,” says Mr Ganley, BEAT & Environmental Advocacy Coordinator.

Earth Week is an important event that promotes environmental awareness and conservation. A huge thank you to the BEAT & Environmental Advocacy teams led by Sophie H, Mack ‘23, Sarah O, Hope ‘23, Ms Miller, Mr Ganley, and the club leaders for organizing a week filled with fun activities that provide an opportunity for people to come together and take action to protect the planet. By participating in Earth Week activities and adopting sustainable living practices, we can make a positive impact on the environment and create a better future for ourselves and future generations.
