Fortune Brings In Some Boats That Are Not Steered

13 February 2021
Mr Neil Bryant, Proud Coach
This Canadian government would fund all in vitro fertilization (IVF).

This is hardly the most common Grade 8-10 conversation for a sunny Saturday in February. To wit, most parents would likely raise an eyebrow if their 13 year old child expressed detailed knowledge of the struggles many couples face in getting pregnant through unassisted means.

This government would abandon the use of QALYs (quality-adjusted life years) in medical funding.

Debaters nuthin’ – this coach could not correctly spell QALYs before last month, when the senior debaters were served up this prompt for the 2021 Vancouver Island Regionals.

Intuitively understanding that huckstering from this gallery of skilled raconteurs would be insufficient to win debates with these topics, sixty-three daunted students and adults alike absorbed a full hour of Zoomed lecture from Dr. Sasse, Brentwood parent and general surgeon as well as logical written critique by economic philosopher Johnathan Rawls and end-user social worker (university debater extraordinaire) Nic Methot to get the content needed to answer imposing questions anticipated from these resolutions on February 6, the day of the tournament.

The results of the big day were quite rewarding: Kameel A - 2nd place Junior;
Sebastian E – 1st place Junior.

Brentwood took five of the six available team berths heading to provincials. Isaac S, George H, Inara W, Phoebe K, Sebastian E, Maxine P, Ciara B, Ella W, Katie L, & Kameel A all qualified after four rounds, with the latter two also placing first on Vancouver Island.

Senior teams going to provincials, taking 10 of the 13 available team berths, include Rowland L & Edward L, McCoy F & Sebastian M, Rico X & Sean R, Gabi C & Ally D, Caiden T & Piper E, Gemma S & Kennedy M, Lisa M & Eamon R, Lucinda G & Callum M, Michael W & Ryangwon K, Olivia S & Chiara L.

This might be one of those years, common lately, when listing those who did NOT qualify from the Brentwood Debate Team might make a shorter list. Of the many schools that attended this event, the largest of the six Regional events in BC, our school certainly shows strength across every grade.

Good luck to our team on February 26-27 at Provincials and unqualified gratitude to our parents who came out in 10s to spend eight hours online judging students who were competing against their own children. Debate is weird like that.
