Mamma Mia! has been a hit musical since it was first conceived, with its upbeat ABBA songs and gorgeous setting in Greece. It tells the story of bride-to-be Sophie, and her mother, Donna. Sophie has invited not one, but three, of her potential fathers to her wedding without Donna’s knowledge.

Brentwood’s musicals never fail to impress, and this year’s production of Mamma Mia! was no exception. From “Honey, Honey” to “Thank You for the Music”, lead singers Izzy T and Heather L (playing Donna and Sophie, respectively) had the audience captivated and on the edge of their seats the whole time.

Making a production that spectacular was not without its challenges and hard work. Practice for the musical started at the beginning of the year, and the cast had to give up their free time many Sundays this term for rehearsals.

Director of Arts Ms Edna Widenmaier described production week as “a marathon being run every night”. However, Ms Widenmaier added that, “This company held it all together and more”, and “The show got tighter as the week progressed”.

Clearly, despite the stress and intensity of preparing for the show, students were able to band together and form a strong sense of community. Cast member Pilar A, Hope ‘23, stated, “I think Musical was an experience which I will never forget and I’ll always be thankful for. I had lots of fun!”

After watching the show, Skye P, Alexandra ‘23 stated, “The show was incredible! Personally, my favourite part was the flipper brigade”. As an audience member, being able to see the finished product onstage and the embodiment of Brentwood’s motto of grit and joy was a truly gratifying experience.
