With a young team primarily of 10s & 11s, the 1st XI welcomed a new coach: old Brentonian Denesha Doman Captained Brentwood & played for Queen's. She brought an exciting new perspective to the pitch, with new drills, skills & plays. We began by hosting the Friendship Cup where we played a team from Ontario, GNS & SMUS; the season looked promising as we finished in 2nd. Unable to compete in the ISAs, we played exhibition games and focused on improving our stick work & fitness. While running laps is not the most fun, the team benefitted as we were better prepared for Islands & Provincials where we play two games/day. Hosted by GNS, the Islands were on a rubber-based turf. This challenged us. Tough lessons were learned: sport is not always fair. Though we outplayed GNS in the opener, we could not put the ball in the net & lost a heartbreaker 1-0. We regrouped & played a talented SMUS, but a loss sent us to the Provincials as Island #3. We then came back early from midterm to train & travel to Surrey ready for six games over three days against top teams. BCs began against GNS. Not wanting a repeat of the loss at the Islands, we came out with a 3-0 win. A win against Southridge placed us second in our pool & in the championship flight. One of our most memorable games was against #1 ranked Crofton; we played hard & performed brilliantly. Our final game was against SMUS & we saved our best for last as we fought for every inch of the field & every ball. Despite taking the loss, the team justifiably finished with heads held high, proud of themselves & their teammates. The four Grades 12s finished their high school career knowing they did all they could to lead the team & prepare them for next year. While we might have started out as a group of strangers, through practices, games, & time together, the 1st XI ended as a close group of friends. Kayla B & Rebecca S Coach’s Note: Congratulations to Sofia GP & Antara P for receiving the Hall Mackenzie Award for service and contribution to the program, & to Kayla & Rebecca for receiving the Grimes Award for inspirational leadership.
