First Term Senior Boys Basketball

First term Senior Basketball, the sport practically no senior here at Brentwood looks forward to - and not because it’s bad for us - it’s just quite a bit of running.

Terry Fox Run, Mackenzie House hills, Bay Road, triangles. These are all examples of what some would call death-defying stunts. Our beloved coach, Mr Gage loves the reply of, “We aren't ready” when asked if we can go inside and play five-on-five or another enjoyable and beneficial activities.
Keep in mind most of these guys on the team have come from a nice, long summer vacation filled with relaxation, time spent with family and friends, and to top it off - no cardio. See, fitness is the most important aspect in the game of basketball. There are countless instances where games are won strictly on which team was more fit. It doesn't matter how well you can dribble or shoot the ball, if you can't get up and down the court, especially back on defense, you can kiss your playing time goodbye.

Bay Road is easily the most frightening term to be said around any Brentwood basketball player. Imagine a road practically vertical and about 30 meters long. 30 meters isn't much but when the coach makes the team run up it back-to-back-to-back after running a good two kilometers to the destination - and did I forget to mention the team has to run back as well after the sprints while their legs are pancake batter.

Aside from the brutal conditioning, the team has started to make its way back into the spectacular Foote Center and is currently learning plays and new defensive tactics for the upcoming season. Liam F, Ellis ‘22 says: “I’m incredibly hyped for the upcoming season. It's been a while since I've played any serious competitive ball.” Liam couldn’t have said it better as everyone on the team is hungry for a big time win.

We wouldn’t be the team we are today without Mr Gage and we hope to put a provincial championship ring on his finger and ours by the end of this year.
