It was an excellent weekend for the senior boys programme. On Saturday we entered crews in the single, pair and quad. In the single, Eric Jackson came third in the time trial, earning a spot in the “A” final. In the final, Eric led from start to finish and won the race, a first for Brentwood since 2002. In the pair event, Connor McGuigan and Adam Galbraith placed second in their heat and qualified for the “A” final. In the final, Connor and Adam found great rhythm in the middle of the race and placed second, only 0.07 seconds out of first. Considering they were the only two Grade 11’s in the race, this was an excellent result. The quad consisting of Adam Galbraith, Eric Jackson, Connor McGuigan and Andrew Butler won their heat by eight seconds. In the final they cruised to another eight-second win. The seniors swept all the sculling events in the Jr. A division.

On Sunday, Connor McGuigan and Eric Jackson started off the day with the fastest time in the time trial to give them a centre lane in the “A” final. In the final, the two used a great burst in the middle of the race to gain a lead and then cruised over the line six seconds ahead of the field. In the Jr. A men’s eight race, the crew of Alex Carr, Adam Galbraith, Taylor Rempel, Connor McGuigan, Will Hindson, Andrew Butler, Eric Jackson, Ben Coull and Mark Zhong, blasted out of the gates a half-length lead over the powerhouse Shawnigan crew but were unable to keep the lead placing second by just three seconds, but sixteen seconds ahead of the Victoria City crew in third.
The second-to-last-race of the day was the Jr. A men’s coxed four. Winning the heat earlier in the day, the crew of Alex Carr, Adam Galbraith (his seventh race of the weekend), Taylor Rempel, Ben Coull (replacing Andrew Butler for the final) and Will Hindson, put everything on the line and raced a gusty performance only to place second to Shawnigan Lake School by two seconds. For the senior boys heavyweight group, three firsts and three second place finishes demonstrates the beginning of a very good season.

The Senior Lightweight men, because there were no events in their weight category, had to race in the heavyweight events at this weekend’s Elk Lake Regatta. On Saturday, the lwt. pairs Dillon Horth and Riley McCrossan, and Jordan Willie and Raz Guzman Macedo competed in the open pair. They fought hard in rough conditions, but did not qualify for the finals.

Sunday found these four boys teamed up with coxswain Ben Davies in the open 4+. Though they raced well and had a faster time than two VCRC and one St. George’s crews, they did not, unfortunately, advance to the final.

The boys had their best and most satisfying race in the Senior Heavy 8+ event. Combined with fellow lightweight Julius Vissing, and juniors Wes Desjardins, Owen Gilbert and Daniel Robinson, they had a terrific race, capped by a blistering closing sprint, and edged the St. George’s Varsity 8+ by .33 of a second. Well done fiery lightweights! Senior Girls: Coach Patricia Steinbrink-Kelly
It was unfortunate this weekend that a few of the key players were away due to sickness and a variety of other reasons. With that being said, there were some positive results from the senior girls programme.
Saturday
In the Junior A single, Lauren McKallor and Adelaide Backer both raced out of their lightweight division into the open junior event. Lauren had a good race but did not qualify for the “A” final. Adelaide raced a gutsy performance and won her heat and earned a favourable lane in the final. With tough conditions (a strong cross tail wind), Adelaide put everything on the line and finished 3rd in the “A” final.
In the JRA 2x, Mary Johnston and Quinn Erickson, racing for the first time together, came seventh in the time trial and held the same spot winning the ‘B’ final. Amy Harman and Mairi McGowan also raced in this event for the first time. Deirdre Huestis and Erin Young qualified for the ‘A’ final and finished 4th. Considering these two athletes were Jr. B age, this was an incredible result.
Sunday
The Jr. B Double of Deirdre Huestis and Erin Young finished second in their heat and then led from start to finish to win the event. In the third to last race of the day, the Jr. A 8+ (Cassidy Johnston, Quinn Erickson, Erin Young, Tiara Pettinger, Natasha Hollingsworth, Mary Johnston, Amy Harman and Adelaide Backer), finished third behind VCRC and Shawnigan Lake School.
The Jr. A quad of Claire Meloche, Amy Harman, Danielle Touche and Lauren McKallor were in a very tough heat and did not qualify for the final.
The Jr. A coxed four consisting of Cassidy Johnston, Claire Melouche, Siobhan Willow and Lauren McKallor raced in the fastest heat of the day and did not make the final.

This was a good regatta where most athletes had the opportunity to race in small boats.

The Elk Lake Spring Regatta was a very positive and successful experience for the Junior Boys who won every event in their age group. On Saturday, the quadruple sculling crew of Dylan Glazier, Martin Barakso, Jason McCarthy and Stuart Wylie  started the winning ways with their first place finish, then the coxed four of Dylan Glazier, Cam Sutherland, Greg Willick, Dan Robinson and Andrew Crowley followed with a convincing win. The novice eight (Taylor Adams, Peter Hampton, Dan Hilhorst, Julius Vissing, Toby Green, Bryce Newall, Sean Hacking, Chan Park and Cam Blair-Spears) raced well against three other crews of university-level athletes from UBC and UVic.
On Sunday, two doubles, Greg Willick and Cam Sutherland, and Martin Barakso and Andrew Crowley, each won their heats, then went on to place third and first, respectively, in the final. Between the heats and final of the doubles event, the eights event provided a Brentwood one-two finish. The open-weight crew of Cam Villanueva, Andrew Crowley, Dan Robinson, Greg Willick, Cam Sutherland, Martin Barakso, Peter Chae, Dan Hilhorst and Michael Kennedy finished with a good win, and the lightweight crew of Mike Greenwood, Owen Gilbert, Stuart Wylie, Paiton Brierley, Dylan Glazier, Toby Green, Kyuho Lee, Sean Hacking and Peter Hampton were five seconds behind in second place. This race was an excellent performance by both crews.
In a regatta where t-shirts are awarded for first place and ribbons for second place, the junior boys came away with lots of t-shirts and ribbons. We will now prepare for the spring racing season.

Junior Girls: Coaches Robyn Willow and Debbie Sage
The junior girls raced this weekend with tenacity and fortitude against not only the competition, but also against the fierce winds and rough water. On Saturday, the girls raced in the ever-competitive quadruple event and both crews qualified for the finals. The girls raced the final and placed fifth (Erica Mayer, Adrienne Newman, Emily Hindson, Mairead McCormack, Lisa Winkler and Lucy Ren) and sixth (Clara Duffy, Belle Kim, Sarah Matheson, Kathleen Goldman, Kirsten Gilham). In the coxed four event, the girls battled down the course and ended with top two finishes (1st: Erica Mayer, Adrienne Newman, Emily Hindson, Mairead McCormack, Lisa Winkler. 2nd: Clara Duffy, Cara Smith, Alia Villanueva, Lucy Ren, and Wendy Choi). On Sunday, the girls prepared for the 8+ event, in which the girls were to dual with our friendly rivals, Shawnigan Lake School. The exciting race was neck and neck, but Shawnigan pulled ahead during the last 250 m to win the event. Erica Mayer, Nicole Robins, Lisa Winkler, Adrienne Newman, Alia Villanueva, Dani Robb, Stacey Kosteckyj, Kirsten Gilham, and Sarah Matheson finished second. The girls are now preparing for the April regattas when we hope to meet up with Shawnigan again at the starting gates.
