First-Class results at the Hungerford and Head of the Lake Regattas

16 February 2009
Brian Carr
The Brentwood College Rowing Club had incredible results at the Hungerford Regatta on Saturday and the Head of the Lake on Sunday. Over the weekend, the club won 10 races, were second in nine and were third in five races. Both events took place at Shawnigan Lake School. The Saturday races are 1000 m long and finish in front of the Read Boathouse. This is an excellent “pre-season” test for those crews looking to make a run at the National Championships at the end of May. The Sunday head race is 5 km long and went the length of the lake that was not frozen!
The following are reports from the different squads competing this weekend.

Senior Women – Coach Patricia Steinbrink-Kelly
It was a rewarding weekend for the varsity girls in many ways. New combinations clicked and had success. Also, nerve-wracking obstacles such as collisions, sickness, and last-minute boating changes were dealt with in a calm and matter-of-fact manner. Congrats to all of the girls who raced this weekend and special mention goes to Mari McGowan, our only novice, who jumped into the coxed quad at the last minute and helped power them to a first-place finish! Another special mention goes to Amy Harman who also, at the last minute, hopped into the varsity eight and did a fabulous job! Cassidy Johnston, the varsity coxswain was satisfied with her crew's effort and their focus during the 5km race. Cassidy, who coxed the Brentwood girls crew at the Head of the Charles is excited about the up-and-coming racing season, as is the coach! Saturday Feb 14th 1000 m race

Senior Men – Coaches Brian Carr and Jim Ganley
The Senior Men achieved very good results over the weekend. On Saturday, over the 1000 m course, we sent out a plethora of crews in a variety of events. The results were:

Junior Men’s Single – Eric Jackson – First
Junior Men’s Pair – Adam Galbraith, Connor McGuigan – third, Ben Coull, Mark Zhong – seventh
Junior Men’s Lightweight Pair – Dillon Horth, Riley McCrossan – Second, Jordan Wille, Kevin McDiarmid - Third
Junior Men’s coxed four – Alex Carr, Adam Galbraith, Taylor Rempel, Andrew Butler, Will Hindson – Second, Ben Davies, Ben Coull, Connor McGuigan, Dillon Horth, Mark Zhong - Third

On Sunday, we sent out a new addition of the Brentwood Varsity eight. For Mark Zhong and Ben Coull, this was their first time in a Brentwood Varsity Eight. Some of the crew had never beaten a Shawnigan Varsity eight and on Sunday the crew was determined to change that. With large sheets of ice on the lake, the course was shortened to 4.5 km. This meant that the crew was able to up the tempo and make a run at Shawnigan’s varsity crew which started just in front of them. Right from the start, it was clearly evident that the crew was on a mission. In the end, Brentwood finished seven seconds ahead of Shawnigan. Brentwood also beat the University of Victoria Junior Varsity crew and their 3rd Varsity crew. From bow to stern, the Brentwood crew consisted of Mark Zhong, Ben Coull, Connor McGuigan, Andrew Butler, William Hindson, Eric Jackson, Taylor Rempel, Adam Galbraith and Alex Carr. This is the last head race for the year. With the Elk Lake Spring Regatta in two weeks, the crew will have to find another gear to gain the same results as this weekend.
In the second flight, the lightweight four took center stage. There were a few equipment problems near the end of the race course, but they were still able to hold off the other crews to finish first in their division. The crew was made up of Kevin McDiarmid, Riley McCrossan, Dillon Horth, Jordan Wille and Taylor Adams

Junior Women – Coaches Robyn Willow and Debbie Sage
The junior girls experienced a great inaugural weekend of racing by earning first and fourth place finishes in the Junior B coxed quad event, as well as a 2nd place finish in the Junior B eight race on Sunday. Despite the majority of the crew being new to rowing, the girls quickly learned the art of rigging and trailer-loading; their help around the trailer was invaluable.

Junior B Girls Coxed Quad. 1st Place: Clara Duffy, Nicole Robins, Adrienne Newman, Stacey Kosteckyj, Mairead McCormack
4th Place: Erica Mayer, Sarah Matheson, Belle Kim, Lucy Ren, Wendy Choi

Junior B Girls Eight. 2nd: Erica Mayer, Lisa Winkler, Sarah Matheson, Adrienne Newman, Emily Hindson, Stacey Kosteckyj, Mairead McCormack, Kathleen Goldman, Kirsten Gilham

Junior Men – Coaches Harold Backer and Simon Vermegen
Jr Boys - At the Hungerford Cup Regatta, we entered two doubles and two quads. Cam Sutherland and Andrew Crowley finished in first place in the double event and Greg Willick and Dan Robinson were second. Our two quads were in first and second place before a collision allowed a Maple Bay crew to take the lead. The crew of Jack Kornfeld, Stuart Wylie, Dylan Glazier, Jason McCarthy and Martin Barakso crossed the finish line in second place, while the crew of Cam Villanueva, Eric DePaoli, Wes Desjardins, Paiton Brierley and Michael Kennedy crossed the line in third place.
For Sunday's long races at the Head of the Lake, we showed up with three eights: our heavyweight eight, raced by Cam Villanueva, Andrew Crowley, Dan Robinson, Greg Willick, Cam Sutherland, Jason McCarthy, Michael Lennedy, Martin Barakso and Dan Hilhorst, finished in second place to a strong crew from Vic City. Our lightweight eight of Jack Kornfeld, Owen Gilbert, Stuart Wylie, Wes Desjardins, Dylan Glazier, Alex Park, Paiton Brierley, Eric DePaoli and Kyuho Lee, finished in third place and our novice eight of Nilson MacFarland, Toby Green, Dylan Johnston, Sean Hacking, Peter Chae, Peter Hampton, Bryce Newall, Brett Leighton and Chan Park, finished in 5th spot. Interestingly, all three of our eights finished ahead of Shawnigan's lone entry in the field. We look forward to many fine performances from these athletes at other events during the rest of the racing season. The one Junior B first place win of the day came from the fours crew of Jack Kornfeld, Max Edwards, Cameron Ringstead, Victor Anderson and Cam Desloges. The coxed quad crew of Cam Villanueva, Cam Sutherland, Dan Robinson, Greg Willick and Andrew Crowley were the stalwarts of the weekend, with four races to their credit including two long head-style races on Sunday. Their quad race was marked by sections of fiercely-contested racing, but their eventual placing did not adequately reflect those spots of patchy brilliance.
Overall, it was a very successful and useful start for the upcoming regattas. There ought to be many ribbons, medals and accolades in the near future for the junior boys squad.

Junior C (Grade 8) – Coach Sue Whitney
Up to a week ago I had my doubts as to whether we could race any distance, let alone 3 km, without stopping. The Junior C crews, however, pulled through with all three quads racing without stopping through to the finish line and each looked like a team throughout the race.
The Junior C rowers train during their PE class for one hour and have rowed for less than two months. This feat of actually racing, therefore, was the highlight of their short career.
The girls crew anchored by Tamsyn Cullimore and coxed by Mark Mayadas went the distance for the first time ever. Sara Sicherman, Katie Siceloff and a token male and late stand-in, Hut Chaiyo made up the rest of the crew. The crew finished 4th overall
The boys crews had a friendly competition going, first to beat Shawnigan and then each other. The crews were as follows. Big Boys!! (Cox.) Mark Mayadas, Mauricio Sanchez Herrera, Alejandro Perusquia Cardoso, his twin Diego (a Mexican connection!) and Ben Florez from Fort McMurray. The crew finished 3rd overall.
'Little Boys' (Cox) Yasyf Mohamedali, Alejandro Alvarez Mitre, Roger Anderson, Loet Huis in't Veld and Travis Adzich. The crew finished 5th overall. Next up for the Rowing Club is the Elk Lake Spring Regatta which is being held on the weekend of February 28th and March 1st. The host club, the University of Victoria has added a number of Junior B events which will allow the School to enter in a number of new events this year. If you are in the area, we look forward to seeing you at Elk Lake. The schedule will be out later next week.
