The Brentwood First XI Field Hockey team played an amazing season this year improving tremendously and placing 9th at provincials. The team proved to be hard-working, strong individuals who conquered their weaknesses and grew as a squad. We participated in several tournaments including the Friendship Cup, the John Ferrara Cup, ISAs, Islands and, finally, AA Provincials.

The journey to get to provincials was not linear; it included winning a qualifying game 8-0 as well as battling until the last minute for the second birth. In the moments which tested our dedication, each of the players proved her place on the team and demonstrated true grit and joy whether it was on or off the field. The coaches, Ms Natasha Ostopovich and Mr Andrew Haige, pushed each player to reach her full potential. The team, grateful and appreciative for the commitment of the coaches, is extremely excited to see what next year holds. We also wish Coach Haige good luck at the 2020 Masters Field Hockey World Cup in Tokyo.

At the beginning of the season, the team faced challenges as many of us were moved between the First and Second XI. We were starting to learn how to play together as a team rather than as a group of individuals. This new sense of teamwork led the team to winning the John Ferrara Cup. After playing in many other tournaments and extra games against Shawnigan Lake and Frances Kelsey, the team was ready to for Islands where we earned a berth to Provincials.

The First XI was composed of three amazing Grade 12s, a few Grade 11s, and a large collection of juniors, and although the team will miss the graduating players, the youngsters are excited to see what next year will bring. We practiced as we played, demonstrated grit, and showed joy in everything we did.
