The last two weeks have been a thrilling compilation of Brentwood’s best athletes weaving through the D on the ice and knocking down threes on the court. An exhilarating boys’ and girls’ Hockey Showcase followed soon after by Senior Girls’ Basketball Showcase provided some amazing sport and some amazing-er crowds. However, to cap it all off before the break was the Senior Boys Basketball Showcase, which has historically packed the stands to the brim as they watch Brentwood’s ballers do their thing.

As the stands filled up with white shirts to match the uniforms on the floor, the boys prepared to face up against Victoria’s Claremont Secondary. A Top 10 AAAA team, led by 6 '7'' forward Camden Sparkes and shifty guard Elijah Helman, was sure to make an exciting game for the Brentwood crowd.

Right out the gate, shots were flying from both ends. “We were shooting well in the first half. Brentwood put up some tough shots and we were able to stop [Sparkes] from doing too much in the paint,” said Milan P, Privett ‘24 when asked about the first half of the game. “We were in a good position to take over in the second half and come away with the win.” The teams were tied at the half and the crowd was buzzing with the help of Ms Ramsay, who tossed prizes to the loudest section of the stands.

Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse in the third quarter. “[Claremont] found gaps in our defense for their best players to get easy shots,” explained Mr. Sullivan, Assistant Coach of the team. “For us, we didn’t get those same easy opportunities, and when you’re up against a good team, those shooting percentages start to really matter.”

Although Brentwood didn’t come out with the win, it was still an amazing showing of basketball and school spirit. “Win or lose, Basketball Showcase is always one of my favorite events of the year” said Sophie W, Mackenzie ‘23. “It gives us all a break from school or any other stressors at the time and we just get to enjoy some quality basketball in a cool environment.”

The Senior Boys head to the North Islands Championship at Highlands Secondary in Comox this afternoon. Wish them luck!
