Fiesta into Festival Season

21 April 2015

In the spring, not only do flowers bloom and birds start chirping again, Brentwood’s music ensembles also tune up their instruments and show their talents at music festivals. One of these is the string ensemble, consisting of some very keen fiddle, viola and cello players. On Sunday, April 12 we got a little taste playing at a charity concert in Cobble Hill’s St John’s Church, where $450 was raised for the CMS Food Bank. It went like clockwork despite small glitches in the practice held beforehand. Together with the other ensembles, we were able to show off our talent and entertain the audience. As good as it sounded on stage, months of practice and polishing were necessary. When we first came together as a String Ensemble at the beginning of the school year, many people were new including our conductor, Mrs. Anabel Wind. It took a lot of dedication and practice before we could actually play as a group. Now, many hours of practice and lot of hard work later, “We blend into each other” according to Mrs. Wind. We act as a team and sound pretty good. With a new song it is the same: at the beginning it’s very hard to come in and acquaint oneself with one’s very own sound and overcome pitfalls like C sharp major. Then it gets more fluent each practice until we get rewarded for our dedication with the opportunity of showing off in a concert.  Tomorrow, the String Ensemble, together with the Guitar Ensemble, are going to attend the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival, and hopefully hear the judges’ chorus of praise.
