February Sports Review

9 March 2018
Blake Gage, Director of Athletics
February was quite a month for our competitive sports teams. The hockey program finished off perhaps its most impressive season ever by going 8-0 in league play and captured the high school championship. Indeed, our competitive team lost only one game all season (going 15-1 for the year), a thriller in the final of the Ross Cup where they were edged out 2-1 by an extremely talented St George’s team.  On another historic hockey note, for the first time ever a combined Brentwood/Shawnigan (Shawood!) girls team competed in the Ross Cup. Despite having very little playing experience, the girls battled hard and came away with a well-earned win! Our Senior Girls Basketball team showed tremendous fight all year long as they battled a rash of injuries and still consistently hung tough against some of the better 2A teams on the island. The girls lost a heartbreaking challenge game by 1 point to end their playoff run but finished the season with a nice exhibition win over St. Andrew’s in Victoria. On the boys side, the Junior A team showed just how much they had improved this year at the Island Championship hosted by Shawnigan Lake. The boys fought hard and lost a close game to eventual Island champ GP Vanier in the opening round. They then had to play Belmont (a team that had beat us 63-12 to start the season) in a do or die game. Brentwood was down just three points with four minutes to go but could not quite get the job done and eventually lost by 9. Nonetheless, the loss demonstrated terrific growth for the boys this year. The Junior B Boys also wrapped up an excellent season narrowly losing to Duncan Christian in the final of the Mid-Island Tournament: an impressive feat for a team that was competing against the ‘A’ team from many schools. The Senior Boys Basketball team is rolling along nicely having just won their second consecutive South Island and Island Championships. The team is now playing in the provincials at the Langley Events Center. Our squash team competed in the annual ISA tournament at St Michaels University School where they were able to bring home a set of bronze medals. As we move into March, our Term 3 sports get underway. We are looking forward to sundrenched fields and courts but making do with some rain and even a little snow for the time being!
