February Round Up

9 March 2015
Blake Gage
The main competitive sports that run through our busy second term are basketball and hockey and these programs have enjoyed successful seasons. Our hockey program has just finished hosting the 16th Annual Ross Cup Tournament, the only high school hockey tournament in the province, and our teams represented the school extremely well against some of the top teams from the Lower Mainland. Our Girls Basketball program had an excellent season. The Senior Girls had a number of highlights including a thrilling come-from-behind Showcase win over Shawnigan in front of a capacity crowd at Brentwood’s Woodward Sportsplex. The girls later defeated Shawnigan in the South Island Tournament to finish fourth and earn their second consecutive berth to the Island Championship. The Junior Girls won the Mid-island League thereby also earning a berth to the Island Championship the girls, despite some significant injury problems, came away with a win at the Island Tournament and finished 7th overall. If these Juniors continue to play and develop, the future looks bright for Brentwood’s Girls’ basketball. The Junior Boys Basketball team hosted the Island Championship where, thanks to two clutch free throws with no time left on the clock, the team earned bronze and our first ever trip to the Junior Boys Provincial Championship. Their inspired run continued at Provincials. They entered the tournament ranked #24 out of the 32 team field and one of only two AA teams in the competition. The boys had a great run and finished in 11th place and were the top Island team at the tournament. It was the best season ever by a Brentwood Junior Boys Basketball team, so a big congratulations to the boys and coach, Mr. Liam (Karate Kick) Sullivan. Meanwhile, our Senior Boys had a strong season finishing with a record of 24-7 and capturing the Mid-Island title for the 7th consecutive year. Unfortunately, with the #1 and # 3 provincially ranked teams also in their zone, the boys had a tough road at Islands and came up just short of a provincial berth. Over the break we have a number of tours leaving campus. The Girls Field Hockey and Boys Rugby teams are off to Argentina and the rowing program is heading to sunny California for a training tour. You will be able to follow these teams throughout the break on social media and blogs located at our new tours website, tours.brentwood.bc.ca. As we know, the third term is a very busy time for Brentwood sport. We will be closely following all our competitive teams that include Junior and Senior Girls Soccer, Girls and Boys Rugby, Golf, Tennis and, of course, our Rowing teams. Whether you are on the water, the fields, the fairways or the courts, it promises to be an action-packed term and we are excited for what lies ahead! Have a wonderful Spring Break!
