Eric Jackson Wins a Full Scholarship to Northeastern University

20 November 2009
On Wednesday, November 18th Eric Jackson signed a letter of intent with Northeastern University, confirming his acceptance of a full scholarship for four years of university. On hand to celebrate with him were Eric's parents and rowing coach, Brian Carr, who have been an instrumental part of his recruitment and application process. Eric's phenomenal success in rowing has been well documented during the past year. During this past summer he travelled to PEI for the Canada Summer Games to row for Team BC, winning a gold and two silver medals. He also went to France with the Junior National Team and placed 6th in the men's coxed four. What is interesting, however, is that Eric began rowing just over two years ago and prior to that, did not regularly participate in sports. He became interested in rowing after watching a rowing regatta in Delta (Greater Vancouver) while out on a fishing trip with his father. He began rowing with the Delta Deas Rowing Club after school and, despite never having held an oar before, found that he liked it. Today he is considered to be one of the top Canadian rowers in his category. In September 2008, Eric decided to come to Brentwood both for the rowing program and better academic opportunities. For his next educational step, Eric chose Northeastern since he liked the university's rowing, environmental sciences, and co-op programs. He became interested in Northeastern when he rowed out of their boathouse in Boston for the Head of the Charles regatta. For young athletes aspiring to follow in his footsteps, he offers this simple advice: "Train hard, don't give up."
