Ergfest at Shawnigan

During the past week of life at Brentwood, what Showcase was for Basketball or Hockey, Ergfest was for rowing. Last Saturday morning Shawnigan and Brentwood rowers gathered for the annual erg competition, with about 70 students Brentwood athletes competing for our school. Buses started leaving early in the morning, carrying drowsy novices as well as the experienced crews towards 5 to 8 minutes of excruciating pain. Nerves rattled around the bus like a Grade 9 boy at prep and more than one stomach rumbled as well. As it turned out, we should have been a little more confident. It seemed as if we won almost every heat, dominating our rivals. Screams of pain could be heard throughout the theatre, but they were worth it. Personal bests were on the agenda, making coaches and athletes alike very happy. In spite of all the well-known downsides of erg tests (stress, distress, pain, & nerves) it was a great experience which will help prepare us for future competitions. Individual winners were: Junior novice girls: Teagan M
Junior novice boys: Jaco VR
Junior experienced girls: Jessica N
Junior experienced boys: Alex R
Senior novice girls: Cecelia B
Senior novice boys: Sam S
Senior experienced girls: Kirsten M Lion T, Privett ‘17
