Election Day in Mill Bay

4 May 2011

The Brentwood community got involved in the 2011 federal election in a myriad of ways in the past weeks. First, Nanaimo-Cowichan MP, Ms. Jean Crowder, spoke to three classes of Social Studies 11 students in late April. Then, last Thursday, more than 72% of the student body cast a ballot in the Student Vote mock election run by the same Social Studies 11 students.
Monday, Election Day, brought two more significant events. Most importantly, Mr. MacLean and Ms. Olszewski took a dozen Grade 12s to the local polling booth to cast their first ballots. Well done to these dozen democratic debutants! May voting be a lifelong habit.
Monday also featured our first ever “Interhouse Voting” competition where the votes of a house’s students, staff, parents and alumni were added to produce a voter turnout percentage. Ellis House, with substantial support from beyond the Brentwood Bubble, won with a voter turnout of 96%. Congratulations to Ellis’ verdant voters. The pizza is on the way!
