Diving into Dover

24 September 2016

The Senior A Volleyball team began the season last weekend at an exhibition tournament at Dover Bay High School up Island. With only a handful of practices behind us, many of us were anxious at the thought of competing against other experienced teams. However, when Friday afternoon arrived, the thirteen of us and our committed coach boarded a Brentwood bus, adorned with our newest team attire, feeling positive and ready for a challenge. For the seven of us who had the opportunity to play on this team last year, the play day was a great way to connect with the new players on our team. The fresh faces joining us on the court for the 2016 season are: Emily H ’18, Eva S ’18, Katie V ’18, Taryn C ’19, Vanessa C ’17 and Zara P ’18. During the weekend, these girls continuously demonstrated their extensive skills and love for the game. Whether it was a monumental middle hit from Taryn or consistent serving from Emily, they never failed to impress. To top it off, Katie was named player of the game for her ability to adapt to a new position of Libero. As returning players, we entered this season full of renewed optimism and motivation. Alex T ’18, Amy C ’18 and Nairee P ’18, along with Cate B ’17, Sarah B ’17 and Taylor C ’17, bring many years of experience and knowledge to our team. Their skills were proven throughout the weekend with shattering kills from Taylor and Cate, along with consecutive passes from Sarah. Combined with the strategic coaching from ‘Foug’, we left the tournament with a 5-1 victory demolishing teams such as Wellington, Timberline and Isfeld. Coming out of the opening tournament, we anticipate a season of hard work and lots of travel. Upcoming tournaments include UBC, Camosun, Crofton House and ISAs. Once again it promises to be a busy first term, juggling extra practices and academics expectations from our teachers. Ultimately, we hope that all our effort and time will pay off with a spot at provincials in early December in Vanderhoof. If this past weekend was any indication of the season to come, grab your winter boots and book your tickets! Cayley S, Allard ‘17
