Debate and Model UN

28 April 2016

From the excitement of our own IMUN, to a mock trial at the Supreme Court of Canada, and the first World Scholars’ Cup in this part of the world, our debaters have been very busy; our year was a barn-burner in all three terms. In late November, we hosted Brentwood’s second IMUN (Island Model United Nations: www.imun.ca). Centered on a theme of conflict and resolution, our staff team organised a range of committees, including the high-stakes JCC North Korea and the fanciful Harry Potter Wizarding Council. We then journeyed to la belle province where we participated in the largest MUN conference in Canada: SSUNS. In January, we returned from VMUN (Vancouver Model United Nations) with five much-coveted awards and, moving forward a few months, our seniors planned and ran significant committees of Shawnigan Lake School’s springtime conference. Again this year, Brentwood dominated at the Regional and Provincial debate tournaments and Kavi G, Whittall ‘17 & Afyz M, Privett ‘17 ventured to snowy Saskatoon for Nationals. We sparred in the inter-house arena and hosted Western Canada’s first World Scholars’ Cup. Other highlights included the Golden Gnome Tournament, where the prizes are garden gargoyles, and the Harry Potter Invitational, where debaters were awarded Elder wands.  Whether in the courtrooms, standing at the podium, or participating in a moderated caucus, Brentwood’s debaters continue to make waves, and have enjoyed another great year. Thanks to our selfless and talented coaches, Mr. Bryant, Ms. Steele-MacInnes & Mr. Skardal, for another terrific year. Romy G & Tegwyn C, Allard ‘17
