Debate 2018

From the Acropolis to the Big Apple, and various locations here in Canada, Debate has truly shone this year. The club participated in numerous tournaments, all of which included outstanding performances and many victories.  A group of talented students travelled to Greece to participate in the World Scholars Cup Global Round. This highlighted their abilities to debate, creatively write, and gather general knowledge of trivia. Stand-out performances included that of Grant D who claimed First Place in the whole tournament and Emma M who was the highest scoring Brentwood student. The club had a strong showing at the Golden Gnome tournament in Victoria and a group of top-performing students travelled to Yale to compete in the World Scholars Cup. Once again, Brentwood’s debaters were excellent, including Sarah L, first in debate, and Dylan C. It was another wonderful trip with the debaters spending time in New York before the competition.  In November, Morgan W and John E travelled to Montreal to compete in the Oxford Cup and, in December, Liam P and Marc Y were invited to compete in the BC Qualifiers for Team Canada. Later in the year, after some amazing regional results, three Brentwood teams qualified for provincials in Abbotsford where Jaylynn B and Sunil C qualified for Nationals. On the Model United Nations front, the club had MUN days almost every week where we discussed a variety of global issues and topics, as well as the Vancouver Model United Nations and the ShawMUN, here on the Island, from which our delegates returned with many awards. On top of performing a variety of speeches in class, students participated in a range of public speaking competitions, including various local competitions and the International Independent Schools Championships in Winnipeg, where Jaylynn and Emma brought home medals in the Impromptu Speaking and Dramatic Monologue categories.
