On Wednesday, October 7th, Darren Barber (1987) visited the school to say hi to his old teachers and see this year's crop of rowers. Darren is an Olympic gold medalist from the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Yesterday he got out on the water with his old high school coach, Tony Carr, and watched the second installment of the Best in Boathouse competition. This is a bi-weekly event that involves the entire boathouse racing over a 2000 meter course. Based on gold standards from the Canadian High School Championships, crews race to get the highest percentage to win the coveted "Best in Boathouse" pin. Now a doctor practicing in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Darren presented the pins to the winners at the end of the race. More recent Brentonian Olympic medalists have been inspired by Darren's Olympic photo on the wall next to the boathouse, including Malcolm Howard (2001) who won gold in the Mens Eight in 2008 as well as Scott Frandsen (1998) and Dave Calder (1996) who won silver medals for the Mens Pair in 2008. Maybe the athletes who received pins from Darren yesterday will be inspired and set some Olympic goals for the future!
