Dancing Excellence: Rebecca M

29 January 2013
Edna, W.
Centuries ago when I was at theatre school in London, I had the remarkable once-in-a-lifetime experience of watching the iconic ballet dancer Rudolph Nureyev partner Natalia Makarova at a performance at Covent Garden.

She had just defected from the USSR and he was standing in for the principal dancer who had a broken ankle. The pair had trained together at the Kirov Ballet School. I watched him place his hand on the stage and take hold of her ankle, then straight arm lift her, with only one hand, over his head.

It was at that moment that I truly began to appreciate the athleticism of ballet.

Like other elite athletes, they train for years building skills, strength and endurance. They test themselves against rigorous exams, and I am delighted to announce today that Rebecca M, Mackenzie ’14, has achieved her Grade 6 with Distinction from the Royal Academy of Dance. Please congratulate Rebecca on this achievement.
