This past Tuesday, six Brentonians, Aaron A, Daniel E, Austin G, Loet H, Davin K, and Calvin S departed for St. Michaels University School to play rugby for the Southern Island Barbarians. This team was a combination of Brentwood Junior A colts, and players from the SMUS and Oak Bay juniors. The opponent was a touring side from Penair Academy in Cornwall, England, whose beautiful countryside and passion for rugby are staples of the region.

The match proved to be closely contested as the Penair XV took the lead early in the match. The Barbarians, not to be outdone, responded with a try to set the tempo early in the game. The Barbarians played an excellent flowing style of rugby much in the fashion of the Brentwood Rugby programme, and further tries were scored by a variety of players including Brentwood’s Calvin S.

The match result was a victory for Penair Academy, 32-22, with two well deserved tries at the end of the match. After the match, the boys continued onto the veranda of the Wenman Pavilion for pizza and drinks, as we thoroughly enjoyed the company of our new friends from England. The day ended with a captain’s exchange of jerseys and a Cornwall tie being awarded to our coach, Mr. Wesley Plater. Overall, the match proved to be a good learning experience and it will certainly help us as we prepare for the upcoming match again SMUS on the 7th of June.
