Colts Rugby Season: The Warmup

25 February 2019

As the snow slowly melts away, and term two sports seasons come to a close, nearly 40 junior boys are getting excited for the beginning of the 2019 school rugby season. These 37 young troopers range from a great variety of nationalities, coming from at least eight different countries around the globe. After talking to a few of the returning rugby players, I came to the conclusion that the main reason these Colts came back to the team this year was that they just “Can’t wait to tackle some boys on the pitch!” as Jacob Z, Privett ‘21 expressed.  The team will be competing in the North Island division, against teams like NDSS, Vanier, and arch-rival and rugby powerhouse, Shawnigan Lake School. The boys are also getting fired up for the Provincial Rugby 7s tournament that will likely be held at St. George’s School in Vancouver.  I asked Noel P, Whittall ‘21 - a first year rugby player from Calgary, and a very accomplished soccer player - why he decided to join rugby. He replied: “My family is from New Zealand, and they are big fans of the All Black rugby team. I decided to give it a go, to try something new, and I am excited to try a completely different game than I am used to.” As they say, a soccer ball has no point to it. Weather permitting, the boys kick of their season on March 5th in a pre-season jamboree, and are itching to start a promising year. Jack NG, Ellis ‘21
