Colts Rugby Kicks off the 2012 Spring Season

15 March 2012

Last Thursday, all of our junior rugby boys jumped on a bus and headed to the school up the street. Shawnigan has a great rugby program and a strong team, but the Brentwood Colts came with confidence and even though we had tries scored against us, we still played hard and really improved.

Two days later, on Saturday morning, both the First XV and the Colts took a ride to the Cowichan RFC to play against Cowichan Secondary School. Though the scrums were uncontested, and there was only one 30-minute period, this was not a controlled scrimmage.

The Cowichan team were big and physical. For the most part we controlled the breakdowns and protected our ball. We came up strong on defense and made our tackles. On offence we did lots of forward ball to pass the gain line then shot it out wide to our backs. When the whistle was blown it were three tries to Brentwood and none to Cowichan. The tries were scored by Patrick B, Ole B, and Keaton A.

The Colts played a great game and we have a fantastic season ahead of us. We have proven that we can play competitive rugby and we’re excited about what is to come.

The Junior Boys Rugby team recently embarked on our 3rd game in the last two weeks. Despite limited practice time, the boys have impressed the coaches with their dedication and focus. On a beautiful, sunny, early March day we travelled across the Malahat to play the always well drilled and skilled SMUS colts. The game started with a barrage of attack from our opponents, countered by a defense, unorganized at times, but committed to tackling and working to gain possession of the ball.

When we had the ball in hand the team moved it well and began attacking the gain line. SMUS managed to penetrate our defense and score the first try, unconverted. We responded with some wonderful foot work and speed by Thomas S setting us up in position to gain a penalty where Jack H kicked the ball in touch inside SMUS’s 5 meter line. Off the line-out we managed to set up an excellent drive and Dexter M was able to touch the ball down. Try scored, Jack H slotted the conversion: 7-5 BCS.

Nearing the half, substitutions were made with boys who had a mix of experience and they steadfastly held the fort. With the starters back in and the boys buzzing with positive energy, they dominated play putting SMUS on their back foot. Ole B, our newly-appointed Captain, was the work horse of the day tackling, running with the ball and creating space for his teammates. Josh D, who had a very good game at outside center, rambled through the defensive line and forced his way over the line for our second try to put us up 12-5 with 10 minutes to play.

We dominating play once again, but a turnover occurred just inside our 22 meter line and a break was made by a very strong SMUS runner who scored what was to be the winning try: SMUS 14-BCS 12.

The team is to be congratulated on a great start to the season and we look forward to hitting the pitch again after Spring Break.

Mr. Wes Plater
Coach
