Christmas Spirit

23 December 2013

Maybe Christmas, the Grinch thought, doesn't come from a store. Many of us often become absorbed by the department store Santa Claus and the many arrays of holiday decorations that fill the shelves. We focus on our Christmas to-do lists: stuff the turkey, bake the pie, mash the potatoes, call the relatives, satisfy the kids – the list goes on. In late November, Privett invited the Hope girls over to assist with their house decorating: stringing garlands across doorways, hanging lights from the tree, putting together gingerbread houses. And as much as this was the initial purpose of the gathering, it was not the end result: that was about coming together and experiencing the Christmas season together. Friends were able to catch up as they sat drinking the gourmet hot chocolate made by Andrew Y ‘14 and Faryn B ‘15, as well as reminisce about the past Christmas decorating days. This is a prime example of what Christmas should truly be about: not stressing about Christmas dinner or what Santa may or may not bring you. Unlike Thanksgiving, at Christmas, we aren’t forced to remember all that we are thankful for. But quite honestly, this should be something that we always strive to do. Appreciating those around us, acknowledging those who couldn’t be with us – challenge ourselves this month. Take a moment this month and forget about your shopping list, instead make the decision to cherish those around you. Merry Christmas everybody, and may your holiday season be filled with peace and joy! Karli S, ‘14
