Capture the Flag!

12 October 2019

Last Friday night prep for the Grade 12s was cancelled in favour of something a little bit different. Like prep, it was sweaty, and it was gruesome, but there was a lot more running and strategizing involved in this activity than in a normal night of studying. Yes, we seniors were playing Capture the Flag. Yes, we made a lot of noise, and, yes, things might have gotten a little competitive as well. Along with Kindergarten Dress-Up Day, this inaugural event was put on by this year’s Grad Council. They are responsible for organizing events for the 2020 Brentwood graduates, and they are off to a hot start after a fun night of tromping through the mud with teammates. “It was something super out of the ordinary for our grade, especially because we don’t have P.E.,” said Grad Council President Desola O, Hope ‘20. “We don’t often play fun games like that, and never as a grade, so playing it was a complete blast.” Each sister-brother house pair was teamed up, and given a quadrant of the Brentwood campus to defend. They hid three flags within their territory, and could venture out into any of the other quadrants with the obvious risk of being tagged and left in another team’s jail feeling neglected and ashamed. In my experience, I enjoyed being chased over doing the chasing, so I was motivated to help my team on the attacking side of the game, and, before long, found myself alone in enemy territory. The friendly buffer zone was a distance away, and my quest for a heroic flag-steal sent me deeper into unfriendly land. As foreshadowed, I consequently found myself in the Mack-Ellis jail for a solid twenty minutes. It was certainly a new experience to see someone you only know from Calc 12, for example, hustling to make a tag, and it made for a fun evening. “We had free reign over the whole campus for over an hour. It was a solid, new Grad event” enthused Brendan O, Whittall ‘20, reminiscing about the event. Although it was not worth interhouse points, Alex-Whittall did take the win that night - humble brag. In the meantime, we await to see what Grad Council has planned for us next. Jack P, Whittall ‘20
