Last Tuesday, the Grade 10s enjoyed a day at Camp Qwanoes in Chemainus. Activities included “The Screamer” (a zip line), “The Sky Scraper” (a 75 foot swing), “The Elevator” (a rope climbing challenge) and Capture the Flag. All of these were meant to help the Grade 10s bond, and help each other conquer fears. Two climbers started up the 60 foot polls to the platforms. At the top of the slightly swaying platform, they clipped into a safety rope and to a pulley. Hearts beating rapidly, they sat down and slid to the edge. You could tell that they were thinking “Why am I doing this?” Then the click of a carabiner, a deep breath, a zip and a shout. The two were flying down the rope. After a minute they slowed to a stop, a platform rolled beneath them, they were unclipped and they scrambled down a ladder, wanting to ride the zip line again. After a game of Dodgeball, Capture the Flag, and, most importantly, lunch, we trooped over to the “Elevator”. This is a climbing challenge where one has to scramble up a net, climb wood, skip through old tires and emerge up through a box. This was over a 50 foot climb. When you were at the top you had to repel down. This was a difficult course for most people as they tried to balance and climb up swinging tires. Next was the “Skyscraper”. This is a swing that is pulled up to 75 feet then released and you are swinging at high speed until the inertia runs out. This was terrifying for a lot of people. Almost everyone showed grit, conquering their fears; even Mr. Patel had a swing. In the end, almost everyone overcame their fears, with a lot of support from friends. We all give a big thanks to Mr. McCarthy and the other teachers for their time organizing this fun event. Joe K, Whittall ‘16
