Way back in the Spring of 2007, I sat nervously in the Ross Building waiting for a job interview for an RFA and rowing coach position.

Along came a really nice man who introduced himself and chatted with me as I waited. After he left, I thought to myself, “I’d be really happy working here, and this guy seems so committed and passionate about Brentwood Rowing.”

Almost 13 years later, that first impression has remained true and Mr Carr remains that same really nice man who is committed and passionate.

Mr Carr has made a defining contribution to the sport of rowing in Canada because he focuses on building relationships and promoting the advancement of youth rowing. Whether it's reaching out to programs throughout BC, California, and Washington to develop training scrimmages, or helping you on your path to Team BC, university, or Rowing Canada, his contributions have helped so many Brentwood students not only fall in love with rowing, but also fulfill their collegiate and Olympic aspirations.

Mr Carr maintains a perennial presence at the annual high school national regatta in St Catharines. At this regatta alone, he has earned 20 national championship titles, 19 silver and 11 bronze medals. This total doesn’t include his crews racing at other prestigious events like the Royal Henley Regatta in England, the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, or the San Diego Crew Classic.

Mr Carr creates a culture around the boathouse that is one of fun, dignity, respect and performance. He experiences the greatest joy when watching you fall in love with rowing. His love of the sport is truly contagious and his selflessness is second to none. Spending all those hours with him in a coach boat, I learned a few fun facts about him too. He thinks coaches should never wear jeans to regattas because they’re too casual. He becomes too hyper if he drinks coffee, and he loves chocolate and Disneyland.

The 39th Annual Rowing Canada Excellence Awards, which highlight the outstanding achievements of the country’s best coaches and rowers, recognized some of Canada’s best last week.

Mr Carr received the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his excellence in coaching rowing for 34 years. That is a lot of early mornings, a lot of rain, and a lot of regatta weekends. That’s having to see a lot of spandex, erg tests, and blisters. That’s a lot of grit and joy.

Congratulations Brian.
