Brentwood’s Shad Valley Medalist

25 November 2010
Rod R was recently presented with two academic medals for high achievement in a program known as Shad Valley, a month-long, summertime academic experience organized through the University of Waterloo and offered at several university campuses across Canada. Particularly aimed at young people interested in the sciences and entrepreneurship, this course draws students from around the globe and is both prestigious and competitive. Students get to work with university professors, attend lectures, and have seminars where they work on projects and labs. Last year's challenge was to design and market an innovative product for the baby boomer generation and Rod's team won at the local stage at Lakehead University and then went on to place second nationally. Having the opportunity to network with so many talented young people, being able to develop teamwork skills, and experiencing university firsthand have all helped Rod prepare for Grade 12 and beyond. Like previous Brentonians who have attended Shad, he believes it was thoroughly worthwhile and he urges students in Grades 10 and 11 to apply at www.shad.ca.
