What’s better than a vacation to Los Angeles?

A vacation to Los Angeles with your beloved teammates to play the sport you love!

Over the 2022 Winter Break, Brentwood’s Senior Boys Basketball team flew down to the City of Angels to participate in the San Fernando Valley Invitational Tournament. From hard-fought basketball games, to day trips traveling around the city, to just chilling post-game in the hotel room with the team, this trip was a perfect mix of work and play.

Brentwood was entered into a strong tournament, including Venice Beach, Ulysses S. Grant and the Chatsworth Chancellors, who had NBA legend Gilbert Arenas’ son, Alijah, as their starting point guard. “The game is very different in the US,” explains Julian B, Ellis ‘25, “Refs don’t call as much and it makes the game a lot more physical. We weren’t super prepared for that.”

While the team took some hard losses at the tournament, it was a great learning experience and helped us get back to speed for our season in BC. Coach Gage explains: “Every year, the Winter Break is always a setback for the team just because we aren’t together for a while. The LA trip served as an opportunity for the team to regroup, connect and shake off some rust before entering into the heat of the season.”

The team also shared many non-basketball experiences, including a trip to Universal Studios, watching three college basketball games, and much more. “It was more than a tournament for us; it was an opportunity to learn more about the people we share the court with and just have a ton of fun,” said David O, Whittall ‘23, when asked about his experience on the trip.

A special thanks to Coach Gage, Coach Pasquale, and Mr. Cheng for organizing and chaperoning the travels. Good luck to the Senior Boys in the regular season!
