Braving temperatures that topped 40C, 5 current Brentonians, (Nick R, Ian S, Jon H, Stephanie T, and Martin B) and 2 recent grads (Claire Vannelli and Jordan Wille) raced this past weekend under scorching conditions at the Ontario Championships in Welland. Despite the weather and a long row to the starting line, there were some excellent results.
Nick, Ian and Jon, rowing for Mississauga’s Don RC, won gold in a junior 4x+ and silver in the U17 8+. Martin B rowed a quad for Rowing Canada on both days. He raced exhibition against senior men’s crews and won or placed second every time. Claire Vannelli, also representing Canada, bowed her 4- on both days and always finished in the top three. The Rowing Canada boats were impressive to watch.

On Sunday, the temperature dropped to the mid 30s and there was more cloud cover which was a welcome relief. Nick, Ian and Jon qualified for the 4+ final and it was a nail-biter. They finished 5th, out of the medals by 2 seconds and .05.  Jordan Wille picked up a silver racing for St. Catharines in the Sr. 72kg Men’s 4- and Stephanie T won gold in the final race of the day in the U19 Women’s 8+, also racing for St. Catharines. Two golds and two silvers for the Brentonians!

The junior boys are gearing up for Henley and are back out on the water already. Claire and Martin will continue their preparation for the World Junior Championships on the 2012 Olympic course in Eton, England, August 3-7.
