Brentwood's First LEED Building

Currently we are in the process of constructing a building on our campus: The Art and Mary Jane Crooks Dining Hall and Student Centre. This will be Brentwood's first building with LEED status (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). We hope to achieve LEED gold status, making us the fourth LEED Gold certified industrial/commercial building on Vancouver Island. Within Canada, only three schools are LEED certified.
In the design of this building, our facilities team considered 30 ECMs (Energy Conservation Measures). To date, 18 ECMs have been integrated into the plans. Examples of these measures include: Expanded Geothermal System: Our geothermal installation is a heat exchanger placed in the ocean in front of the building. Energy gathered from the ocean is then piped into the building to provide heat and cooling (see photo). Heat Recovery Wheels: Heat created in the building will be mixed with fresh air and redirected to other parts of the building. Grey Water Heat Recovery: Heat will be recycled from water used in the kitchen and laundry areas. Automatic Lighting Controls: Occupancy sensors and 3-stage lighting controls will minimize energy consumption. Nocturnal Pre-cooling: Outside air brought in during the night will cool the building before it is used in the morning. On-site bioswales: Landscaped areas in the parking lots will naturally filter parking areas. In addition to these efforts, this building has been constructed with a preference for regional materials with a high recycled content while diverting 75% of construction waste from landfills.
