Brentwood’s Avid Athletes and their Augmented Anticipation for Athletic Action

As the early fall sun floods the campus with radiant golden light, the fields, gym, and waterfront are all busy with students returning to their first term sports. While no official competitions are on the horizon yet, the athletes have been keen to get back into their seasons, and revamp their technical and tactical abilities in their chosen fields.

COVID-19 has required that we make some changes to our Athletics program here at Brentwood, however, the goals of Assistant Prefect for Athletics, Abby S, Mackenzie ‘21 remain the same: “We want to create an environment for students of all ages and athletic abilities to improve and have fun!”

Volleyball draws hordes of young women to the Foote Centre every Athletics afternoon. They seem to arrive all at once, gym shoes in their drawstring bags, and knee pads in place. “I really hope we will be able to play in a competitive volleyball season in my senior year” declared Chloe C, Allard ‘21 on a rainy Thursday afternoon, “But although it is upsetting to think that we might not have that opportunity, I feel so lucky to be able to practice on the same court as my teammates again.”

Junior and Senior Boys’ Soccer training sessions have occupied Gillespie fields over recent weeks. Lately, the wet weather has resulted in swarms of sopping wet footballers making their way back to their boarding houses after soggy sessions, but no matter, the four time reigning ISABC Champions back down from no challenge. “The trainings so far have been very effectively run, while staying within all the COVID-19 guidelines" pointed out new student, Sebastian M, Privett ‘22. “ If we have a season, I know that this group of boys will not only be successful, but also very fun to compete with.”

Oscar L, Ellis ‘23 had the following to say in regards to the possibility of having a competitive season: “I am excited for the chance to be back on the pitch again. It might only be intersquad matches, or perhaps even a local league, but any kind of footy is better than no footy!"

It is safe to say that the student-athletes at Brentwood have been waiting a long time to get back to their sports, and we are all hopeful that competitive teams will be able to expand their seasons beyond the gates of Brentwood College School.

Best of luck to all athletes, managers, and coaches. We all hope to get back onto competitive fields, trails, pitches, and courts as soon as possible!
